According to the Encore Knowledgebase for Hoyle Card Games 2005
In order to enable animations and many of the sounds, the game CD will need to be in the drive before the game is started.
So, that would have to mean that it should be possible to open and run the game without the CD in the drive. But, the animations and many of the sounds will not work if the CD is not in the drive. So, it might be necessary to disable both the Animations and the Sound Effects before you try to run the game without the CD in the drive.
However, since Hoyle Card Games 2005 was designed for only these Operating Systems
Windows® 98SE/ME/2000 SP4/XP SP1
there is no guarantee that Hoyle Card Games 2005 is even compatible with WinVista - especially if you are using a 64-bit version of Vista, which is not supported for Encore products.
