Hi James,
On my Mac 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, I am able to change the fonts by either clicking once on the text box, then selecting a font, or clicking and dragging to select all of the text, then selecting a font.
Since the Minimum System Requirements for PrintMaster 2011 Platinum state that the program is compatible with Macintosh® OS X 10.4.8 or greater¹ (with the latest Java™ update), your OS X 10.5.8 should be compatible.
So, I can think of only 2 possible explanations for your problem:
1. Since I see that your email address has a New Zealand domain name, I feel it is important to point out that all Broderbund/Encore products are designed to be used in English only. And, it is a known fact that many problems can occur when a language other than English is not the first choice in Language Preferences. So, you might want to check your Language Preferences - to see if English is at the top of the list.
2. You might not have the latest Java update OR the most current video card driver installed on your computer. So, you might want to run a Software Update.
