jerryschwartznewb -> PM 2011: Prints, but ignores default Printer Properties (12/7/2011 5:44:20 PM)

I'm using PrintMaster 2011 Platinum on Windows 7 (64-bit).

My printer is a Canon i960, and there is a full-featured driver.

When I try to print, I can choose the printer and open its properties. I have the printer set to print grey-scale by default, so I change its properties to print in color and to preview before printing. (I save a lot of ink that way.)

However, when PrintMaster prints my project it always comes out in grey-scale.

If I go back to the PrintMaster print dialog and check my printer's properties, it still shows that it's still set to print in color; but somehow PrintMaster is by-passing those settings.

If I "print" to a PDF, I get color.

Well, this is odd. After I created a color PDF, I went back to try printing to paper one last time. (Insane, I know.)

It worked. Perhaps it had something to do with changing printers back and forth.

There's still something wrong with the handshaking between PrintMaster and the printer driver. Normally, when I change the printer properties from within an application the properties are only changed temporarily for that application. PrintMaster changed the printer driver settings globally, so that other applications tried to use the same settings rather than the printer defaults.

When I changed the printer properties when printing from MS Word, the properties seen by PrintMaster did not change; and PrintMaster was still able to print in color.

Now I have a headache, but at least I have a color printout.

Hi Jerry,

I can confirm that what you saw was not a fluke.

After confirming that I had the most current printer driver installed, I performed a test similar to yours:

1. Set the Printing Preferences for the default printer to grayscale

2. Started a PM 2011 project

3. Changed the printer's Properties in PM 2011 to Color

4. Brought up a Print Preview, which showed that the project would print in grayscale.

Then, after I canceled the print job, I repeated the entire process a second time. When the 2nd print preview came up, I saw that the second print job would print in color.

And, when I went to 'Devices and Printers' on my 64-bit version of Windows 7, then checked the Printing Preferences for the default printer, I saw that the default Printing Preferences had been changed from grayscale to color.

And, I saw the same results with PM 2012.

So, where do we go from here? I didn't notice any way to submit bug reports.

Hi Jerry,

There is no need for you to submit a bug report - because I reported this problem to the head of Technical Support, who works closely with the PrintMaster Development Team.

If you should discover any other bugs in any other Broderbund/Encore/Hoyle product, the recommended procedure for submitting feedback/suggestions/gripes is explained in this FAQ

Thanks.

I could swear that I stumbled onto some page where it said tech support only handled crashes.

Hi Jerry,

You might be referring to this "Technical Support & Customer Service: Broderbund, Encore, Hoyle, Bicycle" FAQ

http://forums.encoreusa.com/tm.asp?m=24071

which says, "Technical Support is provided for only those problems related to installing/uninstalling, error messages or problems that are stopping you from running the program."

However, the head of Technical Support wears many hats, one of which is working closely with the Development Teams for the newer PrintMaster & Print Shop products.
