Am trying to make postcards but they are not central, off to one side. Are American postcards different size to English and if so what adjustments do I have to make.

Yes, they are different. Measure your paper stock and change the paper size to match. Postcard projects are multi-up on a sheet, so you will need to create a custom stock to match the number of cards per sheet, and the margins and gaps.
