I looked on the site, and both products appear to be the same except each one comes with different bonus software.
The latest iteration of the software on the site which includes Mavis Beacon Kids and Hoyle Chess only supports up to Mac OSX 10.8 and does not list Mavericks as a compatible OS.
So if you are encountering problems with the software it's likely not compatible with your OS.
If you were to contact Encore Support at http://support.encore.com they would tell you that your OS is not compatible at this point. Encore can't offer technical support in which your OS does not meet the system requirements.
Right now , if you are eligible to , it sounds like the only thing you can do at this point is get a refund for the software.
The refund policy states the following:
If your grade-point-average within the core subjects does not improve from one report card to the next after using the Advantage products, return this product within 180 days of the date of purchase and we will gladly refund your money OR if for any reason you are not completely satisfied with this product, return this product within 30 days of the date of purchase and we will refund your money.
