If there's a box around an event's text, right-click on the event, and choose Properties. At left center, you'll see a section for Event Effects. Change the border styles to None.
It's possible that the border style is set for the Category of the event, since that can work globally for events. You could experiment with changing the Category to see if the border changes, or goes away. You can decide whether you would like to use Categories in that way.
