When saving a project the program terminates automatically.
Looked at Preferences and nothing there about staying connected after saving a project.
Is there a way to keep the program active when saving a project (without having to restart the program)?

The program is not supposed to terminate after doing a save. Please open a new blank project and add just one line. Then try to save it. If the program closes, then we know it has nothing to do with the amount of content in the project. This is a technical problem which the tech support staff can help you with.
