Joel Pedro shouldn't be sitting in the slot green van on the Antarctic Law Dome. Joel Pedro must be more than 600 miles closer to the heart of the continent and about 6,000 feet higher. Not that you notice a difference.Unless it's a particularly clear day, the scenery in Dome Lo, a 4,500-foot snowy hill on the eastern edge of Antarctica,

looks much the same as in Little Dome C, where Pedro was supposed to be. White snow crunches under boots, white clouds float overhead, and they meet on the horizon. It's like being in space with colors upside down.
But Pedro, an ice core researcher with the Australian Antarctic Division, is not in Low Dome for the species. He is interested in what lies below the surface.

As Lead Scientist on the Australian Million Year Ice Core project, Pedro and a team of engineers and researchers were scheduled to begin multi-year drilling at Little Dome C during the 2021/22 summer season. These would be the first tentative steps towards extracting the oldest continuous ice core from Antarctica.
