In order to open a Family Tree Maker file in Lineage Family Tree, you must first convert/export the Family Tree Maker file to either a *.ged or a *.paf file, then import that file into Lineage Family Tree.

However, since neither Broderbund nor Encore is currently selling any version of Lineage Family Tree, you might want to consider purchasing a newer version of Family Tree Maker from either here

http://www.novadevelopment.com/software/family-tree-maker/

or here

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Family%20Tree%20Maker

Of course, you might also want to consider the fact that, even though neither Broderbund nor Encore are currently selling Lineage Family Tree, they are selling Family History Tree Maker, which would also require that your Family Tree Maker file be converted/exported to either a *.ged or *.paf file before it could be opened/imported into Family History.

And, last but not least, you will want to consider the fact that the newer versions of Family Tree Maker use an entirely different format than the newer versions. IMHO the best new family tree program which still uses the format similar to the older Family Tree Maker formats is Legacy, which can be purchased here

http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/

Of course, Legacy would also require you to convert/export your Family Tree Maker file to either a *.ged or *.paf file before importing/opening it in Legacy.

After I posted my previous reply, I realized that I should have mentioned that both the newer Family Tree Maker and Legacy programs are both compatible with Windows 8/8.1.

I used Family Tree Maker for years. Then I made the mistake of purchasing Family Tree Heritage Platinum 9. I have followed EXACTLY all directions for exporting FTM files, but when I try to open them in FTH, the program just closes. I am beyond frustrated with this and with the inability to get any technical support. I do not find this forum easy to use or see any way I'm going to get a technician to address my problem. So much for the promise that Broderbund values technical support! How many hours am I supposed to spend trying to figure out how to get it???

I'm very sorry for the trouble you are having. However we are just a distributor of the product and support for this product is provided by another company.

Click here to see the support details and website on where to get help: http://support.encore.com/technicalsupport/kb.aspx?kb_id=1647&product_id=3387

Another thing to keep in mind is asking a few questions about the issue. Could the program be corrupt, or could the file be corrupt?

One way to check is doing a generic clean install as indicated on the support page here: http://support.encore.com/customerservice/genericcleaninstall.aspx
