.INI File Error: Configuration File Missing or Damaged

Solution

During installation, a message indicates that an .INI File Error has occurred. This message is followed by the message: "A Configuration file is missing or damaged." Having 16-bit CD-ROM drivers installed typically causes this error. Installing the correct 32-bit drivers should resolve the issue.

Complete the following to verify that 32-bit CD-ROM drivers are installed:

1. Close programs and windows and return to the desktop.

2. Click Start, select Settings and choose Control Panel.

3. Double-click the System icon in the Control Panel window.

4. Click the Performance tab. Locate the File System: entry. If the message "Some Drives are using MS-DOS compatibility mode" shows, then 16-bit drivers are in use.

5. Contact the computer manufacturer to obtain 32-bit CD-ROM drivers and to install these drivers.

NOTE: If no reference to MS-DOS compatibility is made, it is likely that the system is having difficulty reading the CD. Complete the steps below to troubleshoot the CD-read issue:

1. Clean the CD. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the CD. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the CD in a circular motion. Rinse the CD thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.

2. Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:

    a. Return to the desktop and right click the My Computer icon.
    b. Select Properties from the menu that appears and click the Performance tab in the System Properties window.
    c. Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
    d. Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
    e. Click the arrow to the right of the information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
    f. Restart Windows®.

3. Turn off DMA in the following manner:

    a. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click the Device Manager tab.
    b. Choose View Devices By Type. In the list that appears, locate CD-ROM or CD-ROM Controller.
    c. Click the plus (+) sign next to this listing.
    d. Using the left mouse button, double-click the name that appears.
    e. In the Properties window, click the Settings tab. Find the DMA checkbox and remove the checkmark (if one exists).
    f. Click OK.

4. Verify that the most current version of the driver and firmware for the CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer manufacturer for additional information.

5. If possible, insert the problem CD into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue remains.
