When you choose custom print size, you can tell the program the size you want to end up with, and the program will figure out how many sheets (tiles) it will need to do the job. So while it's not necessary for you to design your poster onto a 48"x30" workspace, you should use a workspace with the same proportions ie. about one and a quarter banner sheets. (assuming your poster is 4 feet WIDE, 2.5 feet TALL.) If you will be using regular paper and taping/gluing the sheets together, don't change the paper size from "letter". Because of the large size of your print, your printer may have a hard time spooling the print job. Print only three or four tiles at a time.
