I have upgraded from CC 12 to CC (2016 Release) and am having trouble importing my event files. I can successfully export the files from CC 12 to a csv file, but when I try to import this csv file to CC (2016 Release) nothing happens. I know the information is in the csv file because I can open it with Microsoft Excel and see all my events. Any suggestions?

Are these events you imported, or is it other data you've imported? I recall seeing one of our moderators discuss something about how certain characters or data in CSV files can cause them to appear blank or not at all.

Do you have a spreadsheet program and can you open the CSV file in there to see if you see data?

Do you have a project open? According to the video on importing events, you need to start by opening a project.

Jason, yes I used Microsoft Excel to open and look at the csv file. Here is a copy and past of the first eight lines of the spreadsheet:

1/28/2015 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's &birthday" 1 Birthday
1/28/2016 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's &birthday" 1 Birthday
1/28/2017 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's &birthday" 1 Birthday
1/28/2018 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's &birthday" 1 Birthday
1/28/2019 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's &birthday" 1 Birthday
1/28/2020 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's &birthday" 1 Birthday
1/28/2021 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's &birthday" 1 Birthday
1/28/2022 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's &birthday" 1 Birthday

Ellengard, yes I had a project open.

By the way, to the right of the "PostReply" link, there is a "FastReply" link. How and when would I use "FastReply" ?

Those events go to 2022.

Is this the only event you're using or are there others>?

Fast reply just allows you to add in text where Post Reply brings up a fancier editor. Still allows you to do the same things on here. Some people prefer plain old text over fancy styles

No, I have hundreds of events. I have events for all of my family and friend's birthdays and anniversaries. I was unhappy when I installed CC 2016 and found it would not open my CC 12 projects. However, I was cheered slightly when I thought I was would be able to export my hundreds of events from CC 12 and import them into CC 2016. However, I'm back to being displeased because the import isn't working. Any advice?

Here are some tips that applied to CC12.1. They're generic enough that they may apply to CC 2016 as well:

First export a few events from Calendar Creator to a .csv file, and model your Excel file on that, having the proper category headings, and fields formatted as Calendar Creator uses them.

I believe all fields will need some data, so be sure you have text in "Category".

Don't overlook the Date Range during the import dialog, being sure that you have start and end dates that include the entire range of dates (start date will be the important one).

You could try 3 or 4 names in an Excel file, save it to .csv, and try to import it into a blank calendar and see how it goes. If that works, go ahead with your project in the calendar you want to use.

If you feel comfortable with it, I can send you a private email and you can send me the CSV file. I can then test it on our computers and see if it will import the important information. David does present a lot of good points when it comes to CSV files, but I'm not entirely sure where the error is happening. Perhaps Calendar Creator has a limit to the amount of events that can be imported into the program from a single file, I have no clue.

Hi David and Jason,
I'm going to try David's suggestions. If that fails, I would be interested in trying Jason private email idea.

David, when you said "First export a few events from Calendar Creator to a .csv file" do you mean export from CC 12 or from CC 2016?

Good question! What I had in mind was to export a some events from CC 2016 in order to see the column heading names (the different fields). You may as well export a few from CC 12.1 as well for the same purpose.

You could use those small CC 12.1 samplings for practice, importing them into an empty CC 2016 project.

If you have any difficulty identifying the fields that correspond from one program to the other, let us know.

Okay, here what I have done so far. From CC 12, I exported just the category Birthdays, for Jan 1, 2018 to Jan 31, 2018. This was just two birthdays. Here is what Excel shows as the result:

1/28/2018 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's
&birthday" 1 Birthday
1/12/2018 9:28 9:28 Brian Sheldon's Birthday 1 Birthday

Then I made up an event in CC 2016 for Jan 23, 2018 and exported all events for Jan 1, 2018 to Jan 31, 2018. Here is what Excel shows as the result:

StartDate StartTime EndTime Title Priority Category ImageFile Note
1/23/2018 18:09 19:09 Jim's experimental event 1 General

Here are the 2 things I noticed.
1) CC 2016 exported the field headings, but CC 12 did not.
2) In the CC 12 export for Declan's birthday, I had included the function "&birthday". As shown above, there is a line break between Declan Sheldon Ringler and the function "&birthday".
So to try something in respect to the missing field headings, in the file for the CC 12 export, I inserted field heading to match the CC 2016 export. Here is what Excel shows as the result:

StartDate StartTime EndTime Title Priority Category ImageFile Note
1/28/2018 9:15 9:15 "Declan Sheldon Ringler's
&birthday" 1 Birthday
1/12/2018 9:28 9:28 Brian Sheldon's Birthday 1 Birthday

Still no success. The file with the field headings inserted still did not import into CC 2016. Next I'll experiment by only exporting from events that do not include a function. I hope that isn't what causing an error, because for biethdays of all children I have used the "&birthday" and for all wedding anniversaries, I have used "&anniv".

Try doing a find and replace to remove all instances of those.

Hopefully, if the edited CSV file imports, then you can re-apply the repeat rule the way CC2016 understands it.

You're right, Jim. I'm also finding that the CC 12.1 field names are not exported with the data, and I don't know why. Could it be behavior changed with more recent operating systems? At one time I made an Excel template with these column headings that I've used to paste data from the exported .csv file. They mostly correspond with the CC 2016 headings:

StartDate
StartTime
EndTime
Subject
Rank
Category
Undefined
Notes

The birthday sample I exported from CC 12.1 had no anomalies with the data, and was able to copy and paste into the Excel template. I also didn't see any extra line breaks when I opened the .csv file in Notepad. The events I exported all had the &birthday formula.

Try what Ellengard has suggested to see if that makes a difference on the chance that CC 2016 doesn't like the CC 12.1 formulas, or see what happens with a category that has no formulas, as you suggested, and let us know what happens there.

It's not uncommon that a CSV file requires some reformatting in order for it to be successfully imported into another program's "data base". I have had to do this for exporting one program's Address Book contents to be correctly read into another program.

Once I determined the new program's CSV structure (i.e. Header names and the order of the data fields), I edited my CSV file accordingly, to match the way the new program creates its CSV files. Sometimes that meant that I had to lose a custom field because the new program had no way of containing that particular info.

Perhaps an edited file that looks like this: (but separated with commas, rather than the spaces I've shown for readability)

SUCCESS!
Thank you all. I have now successfully imported all of my birthday and anniversary CC12 events into CC2016. The line break in Declan birthday was the error. When I originally entered this event into CC12, I must have inadvertently hit Enter/Return between entering Declan's name and pasting the &birthday function. Because the entry box is narrow, other event names wrapped around to a new line and look the same as if Enter/Return had been hit.
Now that my events have been imported, I have another question, but I will see if it is already answered in another thread. If not, I'll begin a new thread.
I greatly appreciate all of the advice,
Jim

That's great! Makes sense about the line break error as it breaks the column formatting in the Excel spreadsheet.

I am curious to know if you did have to add the headers to make this work?
