Hi PAF,
Regardless of whether you use the 'Crop', 'Freehand Crop' or 'Crop to Shape' option in Print Shop, the background should be transparent after you click on 'Save' in the Print Shop 3.0 Image Editor.
And, according to my tests, this is true for both Print Shop 3.0.3 and Print Shop 3.0.5. Since I did discover that the crop features do not work as expected in Print Shop 3.0.3, I'm going to assume that you are using 3.0.5.
However, even though the background should be transparent after you click on 'Save' in the Print Shop 3.0 Image Editor, the background will not remain transparent if you select the 'Save as JPEG' option to save the image - because, since JPEG images do not support transparent backgrounds, the background will always be saved as white.
