The following steps are recommended for preventing and/or recovering from software installation problems.

1. On WinXP, Win2000, WinVista and Windows 7, it is CRITICALLY important that you make sure you are logged onto the computer with an Administrator account BEFORE starting the installation process.

If you don't know whether or not your normal account is an Administrator account, do this:
    A. If you don't know your logon name, click on 'Start'. Then, look for your logon name at the top or bottom of the Start menu.

    B. Go to 'Control Panel' then open 'User Accounts'.

    C. When the 'User Accounts' window opens, look under your logon name. If you DO NOT see the word 'Administrator' under your logon name, you SHOULD NOT attempt to install software - because ONLY Administrator accounts should install software on WinXP, Win2000, WinVista or Windows 7.

2. Many software installation problems can actually be caused by problems that existed on the computer before the installation was attempted.

So, before installing ANY software, it is always a good idea to do a computer cleanup - to make sure that your computer is in tip-top shape.

For WinXP, WinVista & Windows 7, click on this link

Computer Cleanup on WinXP, WinVista & Win7

then perform the recommended steps for a computer cleanup.

3. Before installing ANY software it is also a good idea to go to System Restore and create a Restore Point - so that, if you experience problems with the software after the installation, you can uninstall the software then restore the computer to its previous system settings.

It is, though, EXTREMELY important that you uninstall the software before performing a System Restore - because System Restore DOES NOT uninstall software. System Restore does, though, remove executable files and DLLs. So, if you don't uninstall the software before perfoming a System Restore, "orphaned" program shortcuts and files will be left behind when the System Restore is performed.

4. And, finally, to prevent software installation problems, it is ALWAYS a good idea to do a 'clean' install, EXACTLY as described in this FAQ

'Clean' Install on Win98/Me/XP/2000/Vista/Win7

5. If problems occur, either during or after the installation, the first best thing to do would be to click on this link

Troubleshooting Installation Problems

then check out the recommended solutions in this FAQ.
