Calendar Creator 12.1 event descriptions that are longer than 69 characters cause a problem when accessed via the Calendar Creator Event List view. If your calendar has event descriptions 70 characters or longer, you may not have noticed a problem unless you browse for the events or try to edit them in Event List view. The problem does not occur if you view or edit them in the calendar view.
The error occurs in this way: with the Event List view open, and you browse in the vicinity of one of the events that exceed 69 characters in length, a Windows error window pops up (this is Windows 7; Windows XP is slightly different): "Calendar Creator has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Calendar Creator closes. You will not get this error if you browse shorter events without hovering near or over one of the problem events. You may also encounter the error if trying to toggle the checkbox to make a problem event active or inactive.
Most users will not have event descriptions of this length, and those who do will have very few of them. The easiest way to spot these is to browse them in Event List view, but of course this is the action that could cause the program to crash. If you have Excel, here is a way to identify the potential problem events: Export all to a .CSV file. Open it in Excel. Add column headers and a new column called "Char Count" with a formula in the first blank cell in the column: =LEN(D2)
where D2 is the cell in the row with the event description. The formula returns the length in characters of that cell. Drag the formula down to compute the description length for all events.
Using Auto Filter for the new column, choose a custom filter "is greater than" and enter 69. This will single out problem events. You can then locate them in the calendar view and edit them in the date cell.
If a problem event is inactive (unchecked) in the Event List view, you will not be able to look for it using the calendar view, since it won't display on the calendar. A way to delete inactive problem events that worked for me: Identify any text in the event. Filter in the Event List view for the text. In the search results, I was able to "Remove" the event by right-clicking on it, but ONLY by right-clicking to the far right of the row (in the "Participants" column). Clicking anywhere near the description will cause a crash.
This problem occurs in both Windows 7 and Windows XP. I have not tried this with Windows Vista, but I see no reason why the same problem would not occur as in Windows 7.
If you are using an earlier version of Calendar Creator, you may want to anticipate that this could become a problem if you migrate to CC 12.1 and Windows 7, and began to edit any events that might fall into the problem area. It will be easier than correcting them after the move.
