After clicking on a new project from scratch, and imputing the size I require and then clicking on OK, I get the following message.

An album with the name My Project 1 already exists. Choose a different name.

l. How do I find Project 1, because when I click on open a project there is nothing there. or

2. If I wish to change the name, how do I do that.

Brand new at this and getting frustrated already.

Try: File | Delete Project... and if you see a Project 1, select it for deletion. (To be sure, close the program and reopen it.)
Hopefully that will clean things up and you can start a new project.

Otherwise, another option would be to select a ready-made template that has the dimensions you need. You can select all and delete the elements to start with a blank canvas.

Even if the ready-made template's dimensions are not what you want, you can Change Project Size/Type from the edit menu, after you delete all the elements.
