I used to be able to color behind my words and such using the behind the object and it would only put color around were I needed it. Now when I put in fill in behind object
it colors in the whole entire page and that wastes ink....cacn someone helpme?

There are a couple ways to put color behind text:

Add a shape. Format the shape (i.e. color fill, border, shadow, etc.). Add a text box on top of the shape. Type in your text.

Add a shape. Format the shape. Double-click inside the shape and start typing your text. This can be a bit tricky with curved shapes as letters drop to the next line. For longer paragraphs, use the other solution. Typing in a shape is difficult to edit because it does not automatically rewrap.
