Scrolling through the Fonts List Locks System

Solution

When scrolling through the fonts list in the program, one of many possible system issues occurs. These issues can include, but are not limited to, the following:

*program freezes
*system lock ups
*illegible text

This issue can be caused by a corrupt font or by the BDDenver.ttf, Bdenver.ttf, Monotype Sorts and Rage Italic fonts. Removing the fonts from the system will help identify the source of the issue.

* If the issue occurs while selecting a font when attempting to create a headline, follow the instructions under the Removing Corrupt Fonts from the Core Fonts Folder heading below.

* If the issue occurs while selecting a font when attempting to add text to a text box, follow the instructions under the Removing Corrupt Fonts from the Windows Fonts Folder heading below.

Removing Corrupt Fonts from the Core Fonts Folder

1. Close all windows and programs and return to the desktop.
2. Open Windows Explorer, then go to this folder - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Broderbund\Core Fonts
3. Locate the font that is to be removed.
4. Right-click on the font and select 'Delete' from the drop-down menu that appears.
5. Click 'Yes' when prompted to send the font to the Recycle Bin. The font will be removed from the Core Fonts folder.
6. Repeat Steps 3-5 for each font that is to be removed.

Removing Corrupt Fonts from the Windows Fonts Folder

*If the issue occurs when selecting a specific font from the font list, the selected font is corrupt and should be deleted.

NOTE: Certain fonts must remain on the system and should not be deleted. See the list below of required system fonts.

1. Close all windows and programs and return to the desktop.
2. Open Windows Explorer, then go to this folder - C:\Windows\Fonts
3. Locate the font that is to be removed.
4. Right-click on the font and select Delete from the drop-down menu that appears.
5. Click Yes when asked, "Are you sure you want to delete these fonts?" The font will be removed from the system.
6. Repeat Steps 3-5 for each font that is to be removed.

List of Fonts That Must Remain on the System

If the font that locks the system is shown in the list below, choose a different font for the project, or contact http://www.Microsoft.com for assistance. Do not delete any of the following system fonts or any variation of these system fonts:

Arial®
Arial® Bold
Arial® Bold Italic
Arial® Italic
Arial® Narrow
Arial® Narrow Bold
Arial® Narrow Bold Italic
Arial® Narrow Italic
Arial® Rounded MT Bold
Courier® 10,12,15
Courier® Bold
Courier® New
Courier® New Bold
Courier® New Bold Italic
Courier® New Italic
Marlett®
Modern®
MS® Line Draw
MS® Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18, 24
MS® Serif 8,10,12,14,18, 24
Small Fonts
Symbol®
Symbol® 8,10,12,14,18, 24
Times New Roman®
Times New Roman® Bold
Times New Roman® Bold Italic
Times New Roman® Italic
Webdings®
Wingdings®

NOTE: In addition, any font that displays a red "A" as its icon, or is without the TT TrueType® icon, should remain on the system. It is also recommended to leave on the system any font that includes MS as part of the name.

Issue Remains: Windows® 2000/XP

If the issue remains on Windows® 2000/XP after completing the above procedures, it is possible that the @ symbol appears before the names of some fonts. These fonts can conflict with the program. Installing and uninstalling the support for foreign language fonts in the Regional options of Windows® 2000/XP will help resolve the issue.

@ Symbol Displays in Font List

When viewing the available fonts from the font dropdown window, the @ symbol appears before the names of some fonts. Attempts to use these fonts for projects created in the program fail. This issue results when foreign language fonts are installed on the system. Installing and uninstalling the support for foreign language fonts in the Regional options of Windows® 2000/XP will help resolve the issue. Consult the remainder of this note for the procedure.

Install Supplemental Language Support

NOTE: The Windows® 2000 or Windows® XP operating system CD is required to complete this procedure. Verify that the CD is available before beginning the steps that follow. (This process will not work with Windows Vista or Windows 7!)

1. Close all windows and programs and return to the desktop.
2. Go to 'Control Panel', then select 'Regional & Language Options'.
For Windows® XP, if Regional & Language Options does not appear, click 'Switch to Classic View' located on the left side of the screen then double-click 'Regional & Language Options'. A Regional and Language Options window will appear.
4. Click the 'Languages' tab.
5. To continue, choose the item that applies:

* Checks Appear: If a check already appears in each box under the Supplemental Language Support heading, continue with the Uninstall Supplemental Language Support procedure shown below.

* No Checks or One Check: If no checks appear or if only one box is checked, continue with the next step.

1. Click to place a check in the box by 'Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)'. A message will appear indicating that the language files will be installed once you click OK or Apply on the Regional and Language Options dialog box.
2. Click OK to close the message window.
3. Click to place a check in the box by 'Install files for East Asian languages'. A message will appear indicating that the language files will be installed once you click OK or Apply on the Regional and Language Options dialog box.
4. Click OK to close the message window.
5. When prompted for the operating disc, insert the Windows® 2000 or Windows® XP operating system disc into the proper drive, click 'Apply' and follow the onscreen prompts to install the fonts.
6. When the font installation is complete, remove the operating system disc from the drive.
7. Restart the computer.
8. Continue with the 'Uninstall Supplemental Language Support' procedure that follows.

Uninstall Supplemental Language Support

1. Go to 'Control Panel', then select 'Regional & Language Options'.
3. Click the Languages tab.
4. Click to remove the checks from the boxes to the left of 'Install Files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)' and 'Install files for East Asian languages'. A message will appear indicating that the language files will be uninstalled once you click OK or Apply on the Regional and Language Options dialog box.
5. Click OK to close the message window.
6. Click Apply. The language files will be uninstalled.
7. Click OK to close the Regional and Language Options window.
8. Restart the computer and launch and use the program. The issue should no longer occur.

NOTE: This problem can also be caused when Korean/Asian fonts are installed on the system - especially on Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems. However, since the Korean fonts are *.ttc fonts - NOT *.ttf - those Korean fonts cannot be deleted until the following steps are performed. These steps must be repeated for each font file that is to be deleted.

1. Right click on the font file
2. Select 'Properties' when the menu drops down
3. Click on the 'Security' tab
4. Click on the 'Advanced' button (Doing this will open a new window)
5. Click the 'Owner' tab
6. Click the 'Edit' button
7. Click on the user named 'Administrators'
8. Click 'Apply', then click 'OK' on the window which says, "If you have taken ownership of this object, .....".
9. Click 'OK' to all the remaining Settings windows.
10. When you are back at the Fonts folder, right click on the font file, then select 'Delete' when the menu drops down.

* If the font file still refuses to delete, do the following:

1. Right click on the font file
2. Select 'Properties' when the menu drops down
3. Click on the 'Security' tab
4. Click on the 'Edit' button (Doing this will open a new window)
5. Click on the user named 'Administrators'
6. Click in the box next to 'Full Control' in the box at the bottom of the window.
7. Click 'Apply', then click on 'Yes' on the window which says "You are about to change the permission settings......"
8. Click 'OK' to all the remaining Settings windows.
9. When you are back at the Fonts folder, right click on the font file, then select 'Delete' when the menu drops down.

*If the font still refuses to delete, restart the computer then try to delete it again.

NOTE: Following is a list of known Korean/Asian fonts which might be installed on your computer.

Batang & BatangChe & Gungsuh & GunsuhChe - batang.ttc
